The education infrastructure of Somalia has been weakened by decades of colonial neglect, followed by the outbreak of a civil war in 1991 that has led to widespread population displacement and paralysis of social services.
The University is located in a vibrant community that encourages and supports higher education. The university is an institution that can inform citizens, foster debate, and help hold local government accountable to its citizenry is essential for advancing economic and social development. It has outstanding support from local community, a pool of students from high schools, committed faculty and is committed to technological dimensions of education that are becoming increasingly important in most areas of human endeavour. Thus, the University stands on the verge of immense opportunities in the twenty-first century.
Following the collapse of the Somali state and the civil strife 1991, most educational facilities and their organizational structures were almost completely destroyed and simply abandoned as a consequence of insecurity. The Education system ceased to function at all levels. The civil war in Somalia and the subsequent collapse of the central government and its institutions left Somalia one of the poorest countries in the world, and the Somali people deeply divided.
In response to this precarious situation, a group reputable professional, intellectuals of high status in community both inside and outside the country concluded to create higher education institution 2005. This culminated to the establishment and facilitation of Mudug University in 2008. The establishment Mudug University came because of the desperate need for higher education as it was very difficult for secondary school graduates to pursue their education or find a vocational training place locally.

The University is a charitable body, registered in Somalia. Access to education are basic human right and a most critical component to combating human developmental challenges throughout Somalia and candidates/students shouldn’t be discriminated based on sex, origin, ethnic, colour or religion.
i. Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustee also known as the board of Governors body is the highest authority, they elect Chairperson, approve the award of honorary degrees, ratify university president and assess University's annual financial budgets and oversees international relation in accordance to the university Constitution.
ii. The Executive Committees
The university executive committees are composed of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, The President, vice-president, Vice President of Finance and Treasurer,The secretary, Deans of all the faculties and technical support committee, appoint senior officials and supervise and management University daily affairs.
